BIG HAUL: Excise officials unloading the cans from the seized vehicle in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: Excise Department personnel on Wednesday seized around 12,900 litres of rectified spirit from a truck near Vadamangalam on the Villianur road. Deputy Collector (Excise) R. Anbajagane said the truck was spotted by a team of Excise officials on patrol duty. When the team tried to stop the vehicle, the driver tried to speed away. The vehicle was seized after a chase. Driver Ramesh, a resident of Chennai, was arrested. Another person, who was travelling in the truck, escaped, Mr. Anbajagane said. The spirit was concealed in 351 cans. It was meant to be handed over to a bootlegger Swamidhurai, resident of Aranganur near Bahour. The seized material was valued at around Rs. 12 lakh, Mr. Anbajagane said. Ramesh told the investigating team that he was hired from Chennai to drive the vehicle to Puducherry. Mr. Anbajagane said they were investigating whether the registration number was genuine and the consignment was procured from Tamil Nadu or elsewhere. A case was registered against Swamidhurai, his son Manohar and another person Raj under Section 32 of the Excise Act.
