9,151 projects to be taken up under rural job scheme

Sowing done only in 55,592 hectares of land in district

Sanction granted to distribute BPL cards to 22,092 families

GADAG: The Gadag district administration has chalked out a Rs. 89.84-crore action plan for taking up 9,151 projects under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

This was disclosed at a review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programmes (KDP) chaired by zilla panchayat president Padmavati Telkar here on Wednesday.

On the steps taken under the scheme, Chief Executive Officer B.F. Patil said that already 2,13,966 persons of 96,419 families had registered their names under the scheme.

Of the 2,235 proposals submitted to the zilla panchayat by the departments of watershed development, forest, horticulture, zilla panchayat, engineering and minor irrigation, sanction had been given to 1,968. Work on 27 projects had begun, he said.

Participating in a discussion, chairman of the zilla panchayat Standing Committee on Health and Education Manohar Inamati urged the district administration to send a proposal to the Government to declare the district as drought-hit.

Officials of the Agriculture Department said at the meeting that the department had set a target of sowing in 1,95,000 hectares in the district. But sowing had been done only in 55,592 hectares. Lack of moisture had already affected crops, they said.

Officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department told the meeting that sanction had been given for distribution of Below Poverty Line cards to 22,092 families in the district, and the process would begin soon.
