THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The chairman of the Kerala Cooperative Marketing Societies Association, G. Sugunan, has asked the government to write off all the agricultural debts of small farmers till March 31, 2008 by bringing them under the Centre’s debt waiver scheme. He said here on Thursday that there was no justification for excluding those who repaid arrears and renewed loans from the scheme as many farmers did so did so by resorting to fresh borrowing. He added that it was unfair to exclude those who paid up at least the interest and extend the benefit of the scheme to those who did not pay anything at all. He wanted the State government to meet the expenditure if the Centre’s debt waiver could not be used to write off all agricultural debt for the period in question. —Special Correspondent
