‘Believers should realise the intention of the leadership’ ‘Not uncommon that religions correct their mistakes’ KOTTAYAM: G. Sudhakaran, Minister for Cooperation and Devaswom, has come down on the ‘conservative religious leadership’ who, according him, are fighting against the interests of the common man. Speaking at the release of a book on the late literary thinker and social critic M.P. Paul here on Friday, Mr. Sudhakaran said believers should realise the exploitative intention of the conservative religious leadership. Literary critic M.K. Sanoo delivered the M.P. Paul Memorial Lecture. According to Mr. Sudhakaran, communists are not against religion and “we will never say we no more wanted Catholic churches.” “There are so many people who are believers and they need the church,” he said. Nor do they (communists) interfere in the internal matters of the church, he added. “However, it is not proper to say that we should not criticise the stance they take on various matters. And it is also not proper to pass judgments over those who criticise the stance taken by the leadership,” Mr. Sudhakaran said. Mr. Sudhakaran said that it was not uncommon that organised religions corrected the mistakes they had made earlier and pointed to the incidents related to Joan of Arc. The church leadership may be forced to correct the gross mistake they had done by relegating the mortal remains of M.P. Paul to the apostate grave. DevaswomLater, Mr. Sudhakaran said that (Travancore) Devaswom Board members had no business to interfere in the affairs of the government. He was referring to an allegation raised by Travancore Devaswom Board member P. Narayanan that he was not invited to a meeting organised to discuss the preparations for the Sabarimala pilgrim season.
