Staff Reporter
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Cabinet has decided to impose a “lump sum” tax on roadside “dhabas”. The step has been taken keeping in view the roaring business done by these dhabas all over the State.
The quantum of tax on the dhaba owners will be on the basis of their turnover. The tax rate would be Rs.10,000 in case the annual turnover of the dhaba is Rs.5 lakh and above but less than Rs.15 lakh, Rs.22,500 in case the turnover is Rs.15 lakh and above but less than Rs.30 lakh, Rs.40,000 if turnover is more Rs.30 lakh and above but less than Rs.50 lakh and Rs.75,000 if turnover is Rs.50 lakh and above but less than Rs.1 crore. The amount would be Rs.1,25,000 if turnover is Rs.1 crore and above but less than Rs.1.5 crore, and Rs.1,75,000 if the turnover is Rs.1.5 crore and above but less than Rs.2 crore.
The dhabas, which initially catered to truckers have increasingly become an economical choice of many . The authentic Punjabi food and odd hour services attract huge crowds.
