Church assails acquisition of land

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The United Basel Mission Church of Udupi on Wednesday questioned the proposed acquisition of its land in a village in Udupi district by the authorities for the construction of fly ash pond by Nagarjuna Power Company.

In its petition, the church said the authorities wanted part of its land in Santhur village in Udupi taluk for the construction of a fly ash pond. The church also challenged the construction of the pond, saying that it will lead to environmental degradation and pollution.

They wanted the court to restrain the company from going ahead with the construction of the fly ash pond.

Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh ordered issue of emergent notices to the State and other respondents and adjourned further hearing on the case.

Reserved

Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh on Wednesday reserved orders on a petition by K. Kashinath of Mysore challenging the move by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to dispossess him from his shop in Makkaji Chowk., Mysore.

Costs

Justice N. Kumar on Wednesday levied costs of Rs. 25,000 on a petitioner from Hassan for felling “reserved” trees and also for not placing all the facts relating to the case before the court.

Justice Kumar took exception to the conduct of M. Abbas who had filed the petition after felling “reserved” trees in Belur taluk, Hassan district.
