Hillock gets a facelift, panchayat takes the initiative

Mini Muringatheri

THRISSUR: Vilangankunnu, a beautiful hillock and a favourite picnic spot for city dwellers located 25km away from the city, is all set to get a facelift. The area falls under Adattu panchayat, and the panchayat plans to convert the hillock into an organic belt as part of its efforts to maintain the ecological balance and harness the tourism potential. “This will help in maintaining the ecological balance of the area and make it more attractive to local tourists,” said Anil Akkara, the panchayat president.

According to the District Tourism Promotion Council, around 200 tourists visit the place every day, which is situated at 400ft above the sea-level. This number increases on holidays. “We are setting up a green fencing for the hillock, as it faces the threat of soil erosion,” he said.

The panchayat is also planning an orchard with 2,000 trees in Vilangankunnu. Some 600 mango saplings have already been planted,” Mr. Akkara said. Currently, some 28 women labourers are working here under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The panchayat plans to employ another 70 women labourers for work in Vilangankunnu. "The panchayat will also create a safe haven for birds in the hillock," he said. The nearby sprawling campus of Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was once home to a wide variety of birds,” Mr. Akkara said.

But with more and more buildings coming up, these birds have migrated to safer lands. The vast kole fields of the panchayat would help attract birds. Since 2002, the panchayat has been promoting organic farming units in its paddy fields spread across 3,000 acres.

Panchayat opposition leader T.R. Pradeep Kumar of CPI(M) alleged that the panchayat was not playing an active role in acquiring land in the region held by a few private agencies.
