Corridor will hit fishermen, farmers hard: Rythu Sangham

Staff Reporter

Government on land allotment spree, says sangham president

VISAKHAPATNAM: The AP Rythu Sangham will make coastal corridor a big issue on the eve of elections saying it will displace lakhs of fishermen and farmers.

Sangham president and CPI MLA K. Ramakrishna told a meeting held to mark the culmination of a jatha from Itchhapuram at Gajuwaka that the corridor project was a mega scam as the Congress Government had turned into a land broker for big business houses.

CPI Deputy General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, district president J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, Greater Visakha unit secretary A.J. Stalin and district assistant secretary Ch. Raghavendra Rao addressed the meeting.

Mr. Ramakrishna said the Government was on land allotment spree while proclaiming that there was no land at its disposal for giving it to landless poor.

‘Bad track-record’

Stating that the Government had a bad track-record in land allotments, he pointed out how it gave 10,000 acres to Brahmani Steels, 6,000 acres to Raghurama Cement, another 6,000 acres to Lepakshi, 25,975 acres to Jai Jyoti Cement Factory.

For coastal corridor, the Government had plans to acquire 1.50 lakh acres between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, which was being taken up in the first phase.
