Police bust real estate racket

Staff Correspondent

Four persons have been arrested; two are absconding

TUMKUR: Tumkur police on Thursday, arrested four of the six persons involved in a real estate racket. Superintendent of Police Harsha P.S., told presspersons here that the racketeers had sold landed property for

Rs. 1.39 crore without the knowledge of its real owner.

Dr. Harsha said Indrakumar, owner of the prime land in Survey No. 151/28 in the central part of Tumkur city had some time ago left Tumkur to reside in Bangalore. His two sons Mahaveer Prasad and Prabhakar, had been working abroad. The property had been lying vacant.

Dr. Harsha said: “Syed Maqbul Ahmed, Nandakumar, Prabhakar and Narasimharaju (all residents of Tumkur) hatched a plan to sell Mr. Indrakumar’s land. Mohammed Mustafa of Davangere and Devaraj joined them.” Narasimharaju impersonated as Mr. Indrakumar, Nandakumar as Mahaveer Prasad, and Prabhakar as the second son, Prabhakar and sold the land to Ahmed and Mustafa. A stamp fee of Rs. 11.66 lakh was remitted to the Tumkur taluk Sub Registrar.

The police grew suspicious when Ahmed purchased adjacent land for Rs. 40 lakh and remitted a stamp fee of Rs. 30,000. Dr. Harsha said Ahmed had contested the May 2008 Assembly election from Tumkur Rural Constituency on Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.

He said the police arrested Ahmed, Nandakumar, Prabhakar and Narasimharaju and seized all the original documents related to the sale of the land. Mustafa and Devaraj are still at large. The police produced the arrested persons before a court here. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
