President G. A. Nasser, head of the United Arab Republic, said in a statement on July 16 that any attack on Iraq would be regarded as an attack on the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria, according to Cairo Radio. The statement said that the American “pretext” was “regarded as a farce which, if indicating anything at all, indicates America’s contempt for the United Nations Charter, the very existence of this lofty organisation and the value of its works, by violating UNO’s resolutions and obstructing its measures.”
