THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The election to constitute a new Kerala State Sports Council will be held on September 25, under the rules of the Kerala Sports Act 2000, approved by the State Government last week. Prior to this, elections will be also held to elect new District Sports Councils in all the 14 districts of the State on September 8. The elections to both the bodies are being held after a gap of eight years. Giving details of the election schedule, the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar told a press conference here on Thursday that once the two bodies were constituted afresh, elections would be also conducted at the panchayat, municipal and corporation levels at a date to be decided later. This, besides taking sports to the grassroots, would also help Kerala become the first State in the country where an organised set-up would be in place for sports administration at different levels. The newly elected body will replace the current nominated KSSC, which anyway would be completing its three-year tenure on September 29. The elections would be another example of the LDF Government’s commitment to bring about democratic sports administrative bodies at different levels and to ensure transparency in sports administration, the Minister remarked. Major changeThe elections to the KSSC will be to elect a vice-president and five members, while in the case of the DSCs it would be to elect a president, vice-president and six members. A major change brought about in the newly adopted rules is the election of a president in the DSCs. Currently it is the District Collectors who is the president of the DSC of the district concerned. And while a secretary was usually elected to each of the DSCs, that post will be filled through nominations by the KSSC. Besides the Minister, the media briefing was also attended by the KSSC president, T.P. Dasan and vice-president, K. Thankappan. Clubs desirous of gaining direct affiliation to the DSCs concerned will have to submit their applications before 5 p.m. on July 31. The draft list of voters of each district will be published on August 2. Complaints could be filed on or before August 18 prior to the publication of the final voters list on August 23. At the State level for the election of the KSSC, the corresponding dates are August 11, August 18, September 3 and September 9.
