Corporation officials deny flaws in Brahmapuram plant

INSPECTION: District Collector M. Beena at the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant on Thursday.

KOCHI: District Collector M. Beena will submit a detailed report to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, on the functioning of the solid waste treatment at Brahmapuram within two days.

Dr. Beena said this after visiting the plant on Thursday.

She was asked by the Chief Minister during last week’s video conferencing to visit the plant and look into the complaint that the plant was polluting the neighbouring waterbody, the Kadambrayar.

Complaint

M.I. Pareed, a local resident, had complained to the Chief Minister that there were flaws in the construction of the plant and seepage from the plant was polluting the Kadambrayar.

He also complained that the absence of a compound wall had made life difficult for those living within a 3 km radius.

Following this complaint, the Chief Minister directed the Collector to visit the plant and assess the situation.

Followed guidelines

Officials, who accompanied the Collector, said the plant was constructed strictly according to the guidelines given by the State Pollution Control Board and the P.B. Sahasranaman Committee, appointed by the Kerala High Court, to look into the issue.

While the Pollution Control Board norms stipulate that plants like this should be at least 50 metres away from the neighbouring waterbody, the plant at Brahmapuram is 70 metres away, K.T. Rajan, assistant executive engineer, Corporation, told the delegation.

Revenue Divisional Officer P.K. Nalan, Kunnathunadu tahsildar Prakash and officials of the Corporation, Pollution Control Board, FACT Engineering and Design Organisation and Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation, were also present along with the complainant.
