Six autonomous colleges to get notice

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Bangalore University’s Syndicate has decided to issue show-cause notice to six autonomous colleges.

A five-member Syndicate sub-committee, headed by A.P. Ranganatha, had recommended the university to revoke the autonomous status granted to Christ College, Mount Carmel College, St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, St. Joseph’s Evening College, St. Joseph’s College of Arts and Science and Jyothi Nivas College for Women.

Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath told presspersons that the six colleges would be given a month’s time to respond.

“We cannot take any decision without giving them a chance to explain their stand. After they respond, the Syndicate will meet again to decide if the autonomy status should be withdrawn,” he said. Prof. Ranganath said the evaluation period had been extended and that the reopening of colleges should be postponed because of this. He said that the university would notify the date of reopening soon. “We want to finish evaluation of answer scripts first, in the interest of students. If the colleges reopen early, teachers will not be able to attend evaluation. The undergraduate courses can be started a little late. We do not want to jeopardise the students’ future by delaying the announcement of results.”

The Vice-Chancellor said the case of nine BCA students from Mahaveer Jain College scoring single digit marks had been discussed by the Syndicate. The university would take up re-evaluation of these answer scripts.
