KOCHI: Turbidity of the Periyar has in no way affected the water supply in the city and adjacent panchayats and municipalities, according to senior officials of the Kerala Water Authority in Aluva. The water treatment plant has a capacity of 225 million litres a day. The process is continuous and provides enough water to supply through the KWA distribution network, said the official. The turbid water is fully treated with chemicals to bring the sediments to the approved level of below 5 Nephalo Turbidity Unit (ntu) and then disinfected before releasing for supply, said the official. On Thursday, the turbidity was 26 ntu before treatment. “We measure the quality of water every hour to provide appropriate treatment,” the official said. Incidents of coloured water through the supply network would occur only if repair of some pipe had taken place for which the valve was closed. When water is released again through these pipes, it would carry the sediment settled in the pipe.
