Staff Reporter

Textbook distorts history, says M. M. Hassan

KOCHI: Congress leader M.M. Hassan has demanded the withdrawal of the controversial social sciences textbook for Class VII.

Addressing a press conference to announce the schedule for the memorial meeting of Kochi’s first Mayor, A. A. Kochunni Master, here on Thursday, Mr. Hassan said the textbook distorted Indian history by including Communist ideology and ignoring several truths regarding the country’s independence struggle.

Mr. Hassan said the expert committee appointed by the government has also found that there were several lapses in the textbook. But the committee consisting of people affiliated to the Left parties, had ignored complaints that the textbook was filled with Communist ideology, he said.

The United Democratic Front had also appointed a committee to study the lapses in the textbook. It has now gained importance with even the Chief Minister saying that the government would consider the suggestions given by the committee, Mr. Hassan said.He said the English translation of the textbook lacked quality. Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony will inaugurate the memorial meeting of Kochunni Master at Ernakulam Town hall on July 20. V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, will preside.
