‘Government has not implemented its assurance of enhancing salary’ Association has conducted a survey of teachers’ salaries in 12 States in the country DAVANGERE: The Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association has demanded that the State Government implement the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission. Talking to presspersons her on Thursday, S.I. Hiremath, president of the Davangere unit of the association, and G. Huchappa, general secretary, said that a committee of the association had toured 12 States in the country at the behest of the State Government and made a comprehensive study of salaries and perquisites given to teachers there. “The committee submitted a 400-page report to the Government some time ago, and the Government after examining the report agreed to enhance the basic salary and other emoluments being given to the teachers on a par with other States,” Mr. Hiremath said. However, the Government had not implemented its assurance. The two appealed to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to increase the salaries of teachers. According to the association, there are over 2,40,000 primary and higher primary school teachers in the State. Over 50 per cent of the 2,40,000 teachers are women, and they have to shuttle between villages where their schools are located and their homes. AccommodationRenukabai, another office-bearer of the association, said that it was high time the Government provided accommodation to teachers in the villages where they worked. She noted that ‘Parihara Bodane’ (remedial coaching) to a few students who lagged behind in class was not scientific, and it would create an inferiority complex among children. She said that teachers should take extra care to teach such children.
