Released on bail

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Auto component company JBM’s chairman S. K. Arya, who was accused of evading Customs duty at Indira Gandhi International Airport here this past Tuesday, has been released by a court on bail.

Granting bail to the accused, Additional Sessions Judge Amarnath asked him to furnish a personal bond and a surety of Rs.1 lakh each. The court granted bail after it was submitted that Rs.8 lakh had already been paid to the Customs in connection with the alleged evasion.

The Customs officials had arrested the chairman of the Pune-based firm, which supplies auto components to major car companies in the country, when he allegedly did not declare a wrist watch and other expensive items amounting to Rs.7 lakh.

The accused was produced at the residence of Metropolitan Magistrate Ravinder Bedi late on the night of July 15 with his counsel seeking bail on the ground that the offence was bailable.
