Liberal allocation for Tier-II cities

BANGALORE: Even while focussing on infrastructure development in Bangalore, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa paid equal attention to develop Tier-II cities and other towns in the State by making liberal allocations for infrastructure development.

The total outlay for urban development has been increased from Rs. 2,923 crore last year to Rs. 5,041 crore while the grants from the State Finance Commission have been increased to Rs. 2,419 crore, Rs. 500 crore more when compared to last year.

Presenting the budget for 2008-09 here on Thursday, Mr. Yeddyurappa announced a special development plan of Rs. 700 crore for the development of Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Davangere, Bellary, Mysore and Mangalore cities in a span of two years.

Meanwhile, Hubli-Dharwad, which face perennial water problem, will get a special assistance of Rs. 136 crore for augmenting the water supply.

To improve water supply and sanitation in cities other than Bangalore, the outlay for Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board has been increased from Rs. 231 crore to Rs. 380 crore.

Aware of the increased importance of air connectivity in economic development of a region, Mr. Yeddyurappa announced that 10 district headquarters will get airstrips at a cost of Rs. 4 crore each.

The districts where airstrips will be built are Davangere, Raichur, Chikmagalur, Udupi, Chamarajanagar, Bidar, Chitradurga and Mandya, and in Karwar and Kushalanagar (Kodagu).

Meanwhile, Hubli will get an international airport and Mr. Yeddyurappa announced that 700 acres of land will be acquired for the purpose.
