Delhi High Court jurisdiction may be extended to NCR

Staff Reporter

Sheila Dikshit assures members of the Bar Associations

‘Proposal to be sent to Union Law Ministry’

‘Would ease the pressure on state High Courts’

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government would be sending a proposal to the Union Law Ministry requesting that the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court be extended to the entire National Capital Region (NCR).

This assurance was given by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to members of the Bar Associations of Delhi, including members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association, who presented a memorandum to her earlier this week.

Delhi High Court Bar Association president K.C. Mittal, who led the delegation, said at the time of initiating the NCR concept, it was presumed that development of the region would ease the pressure on Delhi and the Delhi High Court would have jurisdiction of the entire NCR.

He said the residents of Sonepat, Rohtak, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Palwal, Rewari, Panipat and Jhajjar districts in Haryana and Ghaziabad, Noida, Baghpat and Meerut districts in Uttar Pradesh are forced to approach their respective High Courts to seek justice which results in long travelling and huge expenditure.

Convenient

Stating that making of delivery of justice more and more expensive goes against the natural principle of justice, Mr. Mittal said with extension of the territorial jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court, it would become convenient for the legal fraternity and residents of these districts.

The Chief Minister purportedly assured that she would take up the issue, and write to the Union Minister of Law and Justice, the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
