Scribes beaten up by Orissa police

Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: Three reporters from Khammam, Bhadrachalam and Chintoor, who visited the MV-126 area in Malkangiri district of Orissa to follow up the landmine blast that left 20 policemen killed, were beaten up by the Orissa police. They were treated at a hospital in Malkangiri. Meanwhile, journalists took out a rally and staged a dharna at Mayuri centre in Khammam town condemning the attack on their colleagues.

Action sought

Hyderabad Special Correspondent adds: Indian Journalists Union’s Secretary-General K. Sreenivas Reddy and AP Union of Working Journalists President D. Somasundar on Thursday urged Orissa Chief Minister Navin Patnaik to inquire into the incident and punish the guilty.

In a statement here, they condemned the action of the police as “nothing but an attack on the right of the people to know.”

They said that several journalists belonging to print and electronic media from the districts of Visakhapatnam and Khammam went to Malkangiri where the Maoists blasted landmines on Wednesday.
