Rs. 3,394 crore for irrigation schemes

T.S.Ranganna

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday announced that irrigation schemes in Krishna, Cauvery and Godavari basins had been allocated Rs. 3,394.41 crore during 2008-09 and added that they would be completed on priority.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that capital grants had been provided to State irrigation corporations (nigams) — the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam, Krishna Jala Bhagya Nigam and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam — to cover 73,000 hectares under irrigation.

Irrigation and drinking water facilities would be provided through Upper Bhadra project to the drought-prone districts of Chitradurga, Tumkur and Chickballapur. For saving water in the Upper Bhadra project, modernisation of the Bhadra canal would be speeded up.

The Chief Minister said the Kalasa-Banduri Nala work for supply drinking water to the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad would be speeded up. The scheme for supplying drinking water to Kolar district through the Yergol drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs. 50 crore would be initiated during the financial year.

For full usage of irrigation water under the large and medium projects, the water users’ associations would be formed and they would be given the responsibility of maintaining the irrigation facilities.

He said that the Jala Samvardhana Yojane would be extended to tanks in all districts, in a phased manner. A uniform pattern would be adopted for revival and restoration of irrigation tanks all over the State.

An experimental scheme for filling up small tanks from large irrigation projects would be taken up.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that a law for regulating the use of groundwater would be framed and implemented throughout the State. A special authority would be set up for improving expertise for water usage, resource management and policy formulation.

With a view to conducting a study on the utilisation of west-flowing rivers in the coastal areas of the State, he said that Rs.1 crore had been provided.
