To fight atrocities against fishermen

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is planning to join hands with like- minded political parties to fight against atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan Navy on fishermen from Tamil Nadu, party State secretary N. Varadarajan said here on Thursday.

Addressing a public meeting to protest against the killing of the fishermen, he said he had also spoken to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to use his offices to find a solution to this problem. “We would not allow this kind of atrocities to continue. Don’t underestimate feelings or protest of the fishermen. The Chief Minister should stop issuing circulars and do something good for them.”

Later talking to The Hindu, Mr. Varadarajan said: “Today, I spoke to the Communist Party of India and will be holding discussions with Thol. Thirumavalavan of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Vijayakanth of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and others. I will also visit Rameswaram soon to get first hand information.”

He criticised the Centre for having failed to curb inflation. This has also added to the fishermen’s misery.
