Spinal surgery on advanced table

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A 39-year-old man from Chennai with a spine fracture on Tuesday became the first person in India to be operated with a highly advanced spinal surgery table at Apollo Hospitals.

The Jackson Spinal table improves patient positioning, relieves the surgical team from applying manual pressure relief in the middle of surgery and allows surgeons to see the higher quality, more complete images required by today’s technically advanced, minimally invasive procedures.

It was designed by Mizuho Orthopedics Systems Inc. in consultation with US spinal orthopaedic surgeon Roger P. Jackson and brought to India via a partnership between Trivitron Medical Systems and Mizuho OSI.

“It met all our expectations,” Apollo’s Consultant Spine Surgeon Sajan Hegde, who conducted the operation, said at the launch on Wednesday. “It is user-friendly for the surgeon and safer for patients.”

The new equipment, which at Rs.40 lakh is roughly three times costlier than a regular operating table, can also be used for joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma surgery.
