UPA government will win trust vote: Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday said that merely because there were differences of opinion between two political parties that were together till recently, they should not talk in a slanderous or defamatory manner against each other.

His observation was based on the political decency he adopted, Mr. Karunanidhi said. He was responding when asked what he thought of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat’s comment that the Congress was a sinking ship.

On Mr. Karat’s statement that friends of the Left should review their support to the UPA, he said if any party reconsidered its support to the UPA, then one could discover who the friends of the Left were.

He was replying to presspersons at the end of the meeting of the High Level Policy Implementation Committee of the party.

On the problem at the Centre – of the UPA government needing to prove its majority – he said he was of the opinion that it would end well. In response to a question, he said he was confident that the UPA government would win the trust vote.

Asked if anyone of his MPs would defy the party whip on voting for the UPA government, Mr. Karunanidhi said he would not get confused by reading the newspapers.

[A section of the media had speculated that former DMK Minister Dayanidhi Maran might abstain from the vote.]

Action as per book

Asked what action the DMK would take if anyone defied the party whip, Mr. Karunanidhi said he would take action as per the book.
