Susmita stars on the opening day

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Susmita Singha Roy lived up to her billing on the opening day of the 4th National Combined Events and Jumps at the SAI South Centre here on Thursday.

The strapping Bengal athlete is vying for a place in the Beijing Games-bound India athletics team and going by her first day’s performance in heptathlon, Susmita looks likely to join J.J. Shobha who made the grade at the Madurai Inter-State championship earlier this month.

For Susmita to also make the grade-‘A’ standard for two qualifiers, she has to touch the 6,000 points tally and after four events on day one, the Bengal multi-event specialist has accumulated 3,590 points with career best efforts in high jump, shot put and the 200 metres.

Susmita started with 13.91 seconds in the 100m hurdles, well below her best of 13.82s, but then recovered to post 1.77 metres (previous best of 1.74m) in the high jump, 11.93 metres (PB of 11.44 m) in shot put and 23.78 (PB of 23.90 s) in the 200 metres.
