Exhibition of handicraft, handloom products from the northeast

Traditional treat: Items on display at the handicraft exhibition.

PUDUCHERRY: An exhibition of traditional handicraft and handloom products from the northeast, which began at the Vel Sokkanathan Thiruman Nilayam on Wednesday, brings together an assorted array of items made of bamboo, cane and hand woven materials.

The exhibition is being organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited in collaboration with the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) of the Union Ministry of Textiles.

The exhibition of items made by artisans of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim features cane and bamboo craft, handloom products, hand woven clothing materials, wood carvings, jewellery, brass and bell metal, which are some of the time-honoured traditional crafts of the North Eastern States.

Striking among the products on sale are the hand woven fabrics with rich and symbolic orientation of Assam, the eye-catching tribal ornaments made from cane, bamboo, glass beads and the magnificent carpets using dragon, geometric and floral motifs of Arunachal Pradesh.

Toys, dolls

Also on sale are toys and dolls made of straw, clay, and the functional “Laishingfee” (quilted cotton materials) and Kauna grass cushions and mattress of Manipur.

Other items on display are tribal weaves, wooden handicrafts, popular items made of cane and bamboo. The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. till July 30.
