MADURAI: Despite high literacy level in Tamil Nadu, about 80 per cent of the children in the age group of five and 12 years were affected by dental caries, said Vikramjeet Singh, Pepsodent, senior brand manager, oral care. Addressing a press conference here, he said it was found in a study carried out among 600 children in Tamil Nadu, Chennai had the highest ‘decayed-missing-filled teeth’ score. It was discouraging to note that 20 per cent of the people ever visited a dentist while most of the people made it a point to visit dentists only when it is unbearable. The study also revealed poor awareness of right technique, inadequate brushing time and nil night brushing. To combat the problem, they have launched the ‘Brush together at night’ campaign that would cover both the parents and the children, he said. The campaign would raise the awareness level about the importance of oral care, healthy habits besides highlighting the importance of night brushing. The campaign would reach out to 200 schools in Tamil Nadu where the children would learn all about dental hygiene, he said.
