Elocution contest to be held

MADURAI: Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, literary wing of Shriram Group will organise Thirukkural Elocution Contest – 2008 – an annual State-level competition for school and college students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The preliminary rounds of the contest will be held at Madura College on August 3. In other cities, the contest will be conducted as follows. Chennai–July 19, Vellore–July 20, Coimbatore–July 26, Salem–July 27, Tirunelveli–August 2, Tiruchi–August 9 and Puducherry–August 10.

Contestants will be divided into four groups – Juniors (classes VI to VIII), Seniors (classes IX and X), Super Seniors (classes XI and XII) and College (Diploma, UG and PG courses). Each institution can send only two entries from each class under each category and colleges can send four undergraduate students and two postgraduate students.

Each contestant can speak for five minutes on the following topics. Juniors – ‘Thottanai Thoorum Manarkeni’ or ‘Odayar Yenapaduvathu Ookkam’ or ‘Yenni Thunika karumam.’ Seniors – ‘Irrultheera Yenni Seyal,’ or ‘Karumamae katalai kal’ or ‘Keitpinung kela thagayavae’ Super seniors – ‘Poriinmai yarkkum pazhiyanru’ or ‘Uzhuvaar Ulagatharukku Aani’ or ‘Nannayam Yennum Serukku.’ College level – ‘Yarae Pizhathathu orukirpavar,’ or ‘Veinthamai Illatha naadu’ or ‘Innathu Inaniloor Vazhthal.’

Winners in each group will be given a cash award of Rs.5,000, Rs.3,000 and Rs.2,000 as first, second and third prize.
