Schoolchildren join fight against global warming

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Children of Canara English Higher Primary School, Dongerkery, will conduct a road show as part of various programmes chalked out by them to create awareness on global warming here on July 25.

The students will submit a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh through Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao at a formal function to be held on July 26.

The manager of the school M. Jayavanth Kamath told presspersons here on Thursday that the school management was backing an initiative from third and fourth standards on the issue and that road show was part of the whole effort. Students already participated in various literary competitions aimed at highlighting the perils of global warming; he said and added the results showed the understanding and maturity of students on the topic.

Stating that Corporation Bank general manager B.R. Bhat would flag off the road show, Mr. Kamath said more than 500 students would participate in the event.

They would display placards carrying messages on dangers because of global warming, he said. The placards would carry suggestions on how to reduce the phenomenon. Stickers would be distributed to vehicle owners and handbills to the people, he said.

A presentation of data collected by students as part of their study tour conducted in the recent past would be made at the stage function to be held on July 26. Students, teachers, and those attending the function would take an oath to save the environment on the occasion, he said.

The campuses of Canara group of institutions too would be made environment friendly in a phased manner, Mr. Kamath said.
