Drive to curb violations along Goa’s river banks

Authorities told to inspect river banks and file reports

GCZMA takes serious note of encroachments

PANAJI: The Goa Government has stepped up its drive against growing violations along the river banks in the State.

After coming down strongly against the large-scale violations in the beach belt of the State in recent times, the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) on Thursday decided to crack the whip against the violators in the river belt.

The authority headed by Chief Secretary J.P. Singh has directed the revenue authorities to inspect the banks of the Mandovi, Zuari and other rivers and report cases of violations. The authority has taken serious note of mushrooming illegal developments, encroachments and reclamation along the river banks and decided to do away with them.

The State authorities recently completed the task of mapping/demarcating the no development zone along the banks of the rivers in the State where the tidal effect is felt and the same has been overlaid on the cadastral survey plans, according to an official of GCZMA.

The exercise was completed using remote sensing imageries following directives of the Bombay High Court and the work was entrusted to Hyderabad-based agency M/s Remote Sensing Instruments as per the Coastal Regulation Zone notification and Goa Coastal Zone Management Plan.

The GCZMA has decided that no construction or development will be permitted in the no development zone along the banks of the rivers up to 100 metres.
