Kozhikode: A two-day workshop on “academic quality management” held under the Technical Education Quality Improvement (TEQIP) programme at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) concluded on Friday. The workshop was organised for faculty members of the NIT-C and delegates from various NITs to apprise them of the methodologies for improving quality in academic programmes. Prof S. Santhakumar, Dean Academic (Courses), IIT Chennai, presented a paper on ‘evaluations and grading’ in general and the procedure followed at the institute at the first session on July 17. The NIT-C has shaped its academic programme based on the IIT model. Lectures in the second and fourth sessions were given by Prof Sunil R Kale, Dean and Professor, Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi. In his first lecture, he explained what a model engineering curriculum should have by citing the examples from world class institutions, with special relevance to IIT Delhi. The third session was by K. Krishnaiah, Dean, Academic (Research), IIT Chennai, who gave a lecture on what should engineering research do and indicated the major benchmarks for evaluating quality of research in the global environment. He lamented the paucity of researchers with real thirst for innovative knowledge and capacity to do creative research in the country. The fourth session was again by Prof. Sunil R Kale who brought the major deficiencies in the present methods of “laboratory instruction” which gave little choice for the students to innovate and experiment rather than conducting stereotyped experiments which is mere collection of data. The second day started with a lecture by Prof M Anandakrishnan, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Kanpur, and the former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University on “initiatives for academic audit’. The second session was on “design of UG engineering curriculum” by Prof. Rajakumar, former Dean and Professor ECE, IIT Kharagpur, who gave a presentation on the guiding principles of designing an undergraduate engineering curriculum with emphasis on employability and effectiveness. A sample audit report of the Civil Engineering Department was presented by Prof. V Mustafa, Head, Civil engineering Department, NIT-C, which was discussed at length so as to evolve a final format for auditing all the departments. K.P. Mohandas, Dean (PG) and T.P. Somasundaran Dean (UG) were the coordinators. Abraham T Mathew was the convener of the workshop.
