SUCI protests nuclear deal

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The Socialist Unity Centre of Inida (SUCI) observed Friday as a protest day here against the India-US nuclear agreement and unabated price rise in the country.

District secretary of the party B.S. Amarnath demanded Central government’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement stating that it was against the interests of the people.

Activists of the party took out a procession from New Town Junior College to Bhagat Singh Statue near Tower Clock covering Srikantham Circle and Sapthagiri Circle.

Speaking at a meeting near the Bhagat Singh statue, Mr. Amarnath alleged that the State and Central Governments have failed to control the rising prices of essential commodities.

He criticised the claims of the Centre that the country was entering into nuclear pact with the US keeping in view the future needs of electricity. However, the fact is that the agreement heavily favours the interests of the US, he said.

The nuclear agreement, defence agreement and joint military exercises are part of the larger strategic supremacy of the U.S., he alleged. The nuclear agreement between the two countries would allow the increased intervention of American imperialists in the internal affairs of the country in future, he alleged. The SUCI leader also criticised BJP over the issue stating that the communal party is always hand in glove with the American imperialists, though it is opposing the present nuclear agreement in public view.

He also raised doubts over the CPI(M)’s sincerity in its opposition as it had pulled the plug at the fag end of UPA’s term, though the process of the pact was in motion from June 2006. State president of AIMSS G. Lalitha, M. Subramanyam and Venkataramana of AIDYO, and U. Mallikarjuna and K. Nagaraju of AIDSO, also participated in the protest meeting.
