ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur Cloth Merchants’ Association has alleged that the Sales Tax officials have been harassing cloth merchants in the name of ‘made-up tax’. The tax officials have also been threatening traders and conducting raids on shops without any reason, the office-bearers of the association said. In a meeting of the association, participated by the cloth merchants from all over the district, association president P. Surya Prakash, general secretary T. Vasant Kumar Jain, organising secretary Ch. Krishna Rangaiah and others said the State Government had issued a circular stating that the ‘made-up tax’ would not be levied on traders with less than Rs. 1 crore turnover per annum. Besides, the tax was also exempted for handloom clothes. The State Government had issued the necessary circular after giving an assurance to the State Textile Traders’ Federation. But, the Sales Tax officials were bent upon harassing cloth merchants overlooking the government circular, they alleged. The association had also decided to intensify their campaign against the harassment of Sales Tax officials by forming Anantapur District Textile Traders Federation with the cloth merchants’ associations from all parts of the district. President of the District Chamber of Commerce P. Seshanjaneyulu , and others also participated in the meeting.
