GUNTUR: The contract drivers and conductors in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Coporation in Guntur region began indefinite strike and sat on a dharna in front of the NTR Bus station on Friday. The APSRTC Contract Drivers, Conductors’ Union had served notice on the management on June 25 asking it to regularise the services of these employees and pay them on par with regular drivers and conductors under the ‘equal pay for equal work’ provision’. The deadline expired on July 8 . The Guntur region secretary of Staff and Workers’ Federation Gangadhar said that the strike would continue till the management came forward to regularise the services of the people recruited on contract basis as they were doing same work as the regular employees. “The prices of all essential commodities have gone up abnormally high, which was forcing the employees to seek additional pay for the hard work put in by them,” he told reporters at the dharna venue on Friday morning. The union leaders said that it was the responsibility of the recognised trade union to talk to the management and put pressure on it to get the services regularised. The problem relates to 12,000 such workers in the state and the Recognised NMU, which had given a notice for token strike on July 19 and 20 must keep its promise and come along with the striking unions to get their demands fulfilled, he opined.
