Rs.30 lakh has been contributed by Karnataka Red Cross for this purpose

Nagercoil: A sum of Rs.30 lakh had been contributed by the Karnataka Red Cross to construct a training centre for tsunami-affected fishermen in Kanyakumari district to prefer an alternative livelihood other than fishing and its allied activities, said the secretary of Tamil Nadu Unit of Indian Red Cross, S. Natarajan.
He said that apart from giving vocational training they would be trained in disaster preparedness and management since Kanyakumari district was declared a tremor-prone area. The training centre at Chothavilai beach was constructed to accommodate the vulnerable section of the community as a shelter, in case of any disaster.
Thirty cents of land for the construction of the centre was purchased.
A sum of Rs.2.5 lakh had been distributed to provide welfare measures to the tsunami-affected community.
Many philanthropists, including Kurian Abraham, officials of Indian Space Research Organisation and others came forward to lend a helping hand in association with the Indian Red Cross Society to the tsunami-affected fishermen.
Two Central Social Welfare Board Crèches were being run under the control of Indian Red Cross Society in Kanyakumari district with the financial support from the Government of India, he said.
