COIMBATORE: The State Eligibility Test (SET) of the University Grants Commission for lectureship eligibility will be held on November 2 at 10 places in the State. The decision was arrived at the four-member steering committee meeting held at Bharathiar University on Thursday, according to the committee’s chairperson G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University. 25 Subjects“The SET (earlier known as SLET) will be held this year for qualifying in 25 subjects. Candidates will be permitted to write in Tamil for 11 subjects. Candidates should keep in mind that all university appointments and most of the college appointments are based on clearing the SET,” Mr. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu. Three papersThere would be three papers that would have to be written the same day. The first paper that would be for an hour and 15 minutes would consist of objective type questions in 10 skill areas like communication, analytical ability, etc. The next paper, for an hour and 15 minutes, would be an objective type paper on the subject. The third paper, for two and half hours, would be an essay type one on the subject. The ten places where the examinations would be held are: Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, Tirunelveli, Chidambaram, Karaikudi, Vellore, and Puducherry. Each place would have as many centres as required depending on the number of applicants. ApplicationsApplications can be downloaded from the website www.b-u.ac.in. Cost of application is Rs. 700. For SC / ST candidates it is Rs. 200. Syllabus for each subject and model question papers can also be downloaded from the website. VacanciesAccording to Mr. Thiruvasagam, there were more than 600 vacancies in aided colleges for 43 subjects as on December 31, 2007. There were also 62 librarian and 59 physical director posts vacant. Fellowship“The committee has recommended to the State Government to award fellowships to the toppers of this examination to enable them to pursue higher studies or research,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
