This Day That Age
Efforts to evolve a compromise resolution on Lebanese affairs which may be acceptable both to the United States and the Soviet Union are now being made by several member countries, it was understood in the United Nations on July 17. The Security Council has before it the Soviet resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of American forces from the Lebanon and the American resolution aiming at the expansion of the Observer group into a virtual international police force. In view of the certainty of both the Soviet and the American resolutions being vetoed by the opposite party, the possibility of a compromise resolution being tabled at the resumed session, in case, the current efforts by some members succeed, is not ruled out. The compromise resolution may come in the form of an amendment to either of the two resolutions. India and Yugoslavia were reported to be trying to persuade the United States not to press its resolution but to leave it to Mr. Hammarskjoeld to broaden the scope of the Observer group’s operation.
