dated July 19, 1958: Death of Faisal

Dr. Herbert Richter, West German Ambassador to Baghdad, reported by cable on July 17 that the Iraqi Foreign Ministry had formally told him King Faisal and other members of the Iraqi royal family are dead. Dr. Richter said that the new Baghdad Government had assured him of its friendly feelings towards West Germany. He said the head of the Iraqi Foreign Office had not changed. The Iraqi authorities had promised to ensure that Germans living in Iraq, mainly oil technicians, were not harmed.
