Corrections and Clarifications

  • The fourth paragraph in a report “India scales down briefing for IAEA” (July 17, 2008, page 1) was “The government shortly afterwards clarified that the briefing was on but it would be only for 35 members of the IAEA Board, of whom 26 are in the 45-member NSG, and the remaining 19 NSG nations.” A reader felt the arithmetic was wrong and that it should have been nine nations. The Special Correspondent clarifies that there are 35 members of the IAEA Board of whom 26 are members of the NSG, while nine are not members of the NSG. The NSG is 45 members strong. Since 26 members are common, that leaves 19 NSG members who are not members of the IAEA Board. Therefore, the meeting is for 35 members of the IAEA and 19 NSG members not a part of the IAEA Board, making it a total of 54 country representatives who will be briefed by India.

  • An article by V.R. Krishna Iyer, “A betrayal of India’s constitutional vision” (Op-Ed, July 17, 2008), had the word “seppuku”, leading to queries. The OED lists “seppuku” as another word for hara-kiri. It is of Japanese origin, from “setsu” (“to cut”) + “fuku” (“abdomen”). To be precise, it means stomach cutting.
