GHMC to take up road works from Rethibowli to Aramghar

Busy stretch: Traffic jams and vehicles getting stuck for more than an hour have become a common phenomenon along the P.V. Narasimha Rao Expressway.

HYDERABAD: It has been a harrowing time for commuters on the now busy road from Rethibowli junction to Aramghar during the last few months. Other than regular users, air passengers too have been hitting an air pocket as soon as they get on the stretch because such is the road condition and frequent jams.

The agonisingly slow pace of the P.V. Narasimha Rao Expressway is, of course, a major factor on the road. The Government had earlier directed the contractor to at least ensure that the carriageway on either side of the expressway is kept hassle free.

While two to three lanes on both sides were black carpeted, the extra road width formed has been left unattended making it difficult for vehicles to use it.

Continuous traffic problems led to GHMC being given the task of removing encroachments, debris and also lay a storm water drain line till Attapur at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore for two kilometres.

Frequent jams

It has already installed streetlights from Mehdipatnam till the international airport. With traffic jams becoming too frequent and vehicles getting stuck for more than an hour at times, the Government has now once again instructed GHMC to take up road works of about 25 feet on either side of the carriageway from Rethibowli to Aramghar, originally tasked to Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

The decision was taken after top officials belonging to police, GHMC, HUDA and others inspected the road to find a solution to the traffic mess a few days ago.

GHMC’s Additional Commissioner K. Dhananjaya Reddy (Planning & Projects) said tenders for taking up the work estimated to cost up to Rs. 25- Rs. 30 crore, would be finalised in a week.

Service roads on either side with footpaths would be built as part of the work to ensure that colony people do not jump onto the main road at every point.

Negotiations have been initiated to shift a couple of religious structures and a water board’s pipeline belonging to the Bhojgutta reservoir has to be realigned.

The Expressway contractor was told to complete the piers work near the Musi bridge soon so that a major obstacle can be sorted out and barricades can be set up to prevent criss-cross of vehicles.
