Foolproof: Government Railway Police personnel checking the baggage of a passenger in Tiruchi Junction.

Forthcoming deployment of a core team which underwent commando training recently to conduct sudden checks is a strategy the Government Railway Police considers vital to check crimes on board trains.

The team of 12 constables, attached to the Government Railway Police, Tiruchi District, handpicked to attend the six-week long commando training at the Tamil Nadu Commando School in Chennai received orientation on various aspects including tactics and handling of different kinds of weapon systems.

The presence of commando-trained constables will be an addition to the armed railway police personnel deployed in “train beats” on various long distance express and super fast trains every day.

Seven of these constables will be based in Tiruchi and the rest in Madurai. The jurisdiction of the Government Railway Police, Tiruchi District is vast starting from Villupuram and going down south up to Kanyakumari.

The boarding points of these personnel whose main task is to go after suspicious elements would be kept confidential, say railway police sources, adding that they would undertake their mission mostly in the trains operated during night hours which offenders consider conducive.

Their presence is expected to further bolster the security the GRP, Tiruchi, provides for passengers with 80 “train beats” in various long distances express and super fast trains every day.

Four of the eight cases of baggage lifting reported in various Railway Police Stations coming under the GRP, Tiruchi District limit, over the last six months have been solved.

Instances of drugging of passengers were nil in Tiruchi jurisdiction, say officials here.
