Farming fodder: Food Minister C. Divakaran inaugurating the observance of ‘Fodder Cultivation Month’ in the city on Friday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of its plan to give an impetus to dairy farming in the State the government may soon subsidise the purchase of cattle feed by farmers, Minister for Dairy Development C. Divakaran has said.

He was inaugurating the ‘Fodder Cultivation Development Month’ observance here on Friday. The LDF government has drawn up a policy wherein cattle will be introduced in places where fodder is cultivated.

For instance there are plans to set up a dairy farm at the sewage farm at Valiathura by bringing 100 cows there. Though Wayanad and Idukki have a climate that is suitable for dairy farming nothing much has been done so far to promote such ventures there. The government plans to change that. Volunteers who cultivate fodder in the State will get more wages, he added.

Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the crisis on the dairy development was a direct consequence of problems in farm sector. However, the State would make a comeback on these fronts in the near future. Kerala would lead the country in effecting a ‘white revolution,’ he said.
