Ariyalur: Tamil Nadu Assembly Petitions Committee on Friday offered a solution to the drinking water problem of the residents of Keezha Pazhur in Ariyalur district. The committee ensured commitment of Rs. 15 lakh for the construction of overhead tanks. The public presented about 500 petitions to the committee during its day-long visit to the district to take stock of development activities undertaken by various departments, including upgrade of roads, construction of a bridge at Anaivari Odai, and the works at the Gangaikondacholapuram. Addressing mediapersons after the visit, Committee Chairman Kovai Thangam expected the work on construction of the bridge at a cost of Rs. 2.05 crore to get completed by March 31 next. The Committee, he said, would recommend appointment of five doctors at the Senthurai Taluk Hospital. He also announced that technological upgrade of Arasu Cements Factory would be undertaken, and informed that the Ponneri tank would be desilted to a depth of eight feet. The feeder canals would also be deepened, he said. To a query raised on the poor condition of roads, Collector R. Sudalaikannan assured to rectify them under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Project. The committee found solutions to 30 petitions pertaining to 2008-09. The rest are to be considered in due course. The objective of the Committee was to ensure fulfilment of immediate basic needs of the public, especially the poor, Mr. Thangam said. Earlier during its visit, the Committee reprimanded officials and the contractor for tardiness in constructing the Odai bridge. If the work was not completed by March 31, 2009, the Committee would recommend disqualification of the contracting company from government tenders, Mr. Thangam warned.
