HYDERABAD: Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy has expressed confidence that in the near future, Chartered Accountants (CA) will become as vital to India’s inclusive growth as software professionals.

He was addressing a gathering of CAs at the diamond jubilee conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here on Friday on ‘Sixty years of Excellence-Independence

-Integrity’.

Praising the CAs for safeguarding their autonomy, he said, “an autonomous ICAI must define the role and responsibilities of members clearly and ensure compliance. The story of your autonomy will find a place of honour in India’s glorious chapter,” he said.

Chartered accountancy, as a profession, had reached a stage where the active involvement and guidance of ICAI was vital in achieving growth in business and economy.

In the days to come, the responsibilities cast on ICAI members would increase manifold and the crucial element of reassurance would play a great role.

Women excelling

ICAI president Ved Jain said it was heartening that increasing number of women were registering for CA examination. Their pass percentage too was better at 27.57 against 24.09 of men. Of the top five students across India in the May 2008 examination, three positions (second, third and fourth) were secured by women, he recalled.
