MADURAI: Every individual is part and parcel of tourism and tourism per se cannot thrive without the contribution of individuals. Autorickshaw and taxi drivers are ‘tourist ambassadors’ who represent the ‘ethos’ of the place, said V. Irai Anbu, Secretary, Tourism Department, on Thursday.

Addressing an awareness programme on ‘Virundhinar Potrudhum, Virundhinar Potrudhum’ for auto and taxi drivers at the Collectorate here, he said that the programme was an effort to lay stress on the idea of hospitality and promote ‘feel at home’ factor among tourists.

As part of the initiative, the drivers took a pledge that they would be courteous and hospitable to tourists. They vowed to greet tourists with a smile, provide them proper guidance, ensure they were not fleeced by touts, direct them to genuine shops, better hotels, approved tourist guides and protect them and their belongings.

The Tourism Department was promoting the concept of ‘tourism vehicle’ by painting vehicles in a manner to impress and attract tourists. These vehicles were plying in Chennai and Kanyakumari. The concept was found to be successful and it would be extended to other districts soon, he said.

Collector S.S. Jawahar said that efforts were being made to identify the ‘best driver’ and confer on him ‘Tourist Ambassador’ title and to issue certificates to shops selling genuine products as part of the promotional campaign.

‘Theruvora Thiruvizha’ (street corner festival) would be organised on the four Chithirai streets where programmes depicting various folk cultures would be performed during World Tourism Day on September 27.

S. Bhakthavasalam, Deputy Director, Department of Tourism, and Sanwant Ram, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation spoke.
