Produce films with Tamil titles: Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

Says present-day film-makers have enormous freedom

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday requested the Tamil film world to produce films with Tamil titles and uphold Tamil culture.

Addressing a function organised to release the music album of the film “Perumal,” the Chief Minister regretted that even the films that were selected for government grant did not have Tamil names. “At least give Tamil titles to the films,” he added.

Recalling his bitter experiences with the censor board, which even demanded the removal of harmless dialogues, Mr. Karunanidhi said the present-day film-makers had enormous freedom. “May be the censor board is under the impression that the film makers are only portraying what is happening in real life,” he quipped. Dispelling the notion that he entered politics making use of his film world connection, he said it was the other way round. “This does not mean that I relegate the film world to the second place,” he explained.

The Chief Minister’s grandson M.K. Muthu Arivunidhi, son of M.K. Muthu, has rendered a song in the film. The song Kaadhal Vaipokamey has been taken from the film Suvar Illatha Chithirangal, directed by K. Bhagyaraj. It is a remix. Arivunidhi’s voice has replaced that of the male singer of the original song, while S. Janaki’s voice has been retained.

Mr. Karunanidhi advised Mr. Arivunidhi not to follow his father as an example in the film world. “You know why he and his family are away from me,” he said.

Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association president Rama Narayanan said the film world had gained a lot from the Chief Minister.

Actor-director K. Bhagyaraj, who received the album from the Chief Minister said he was happy that the song from his first film as director had been used for the new film. Actor Sundar.C, comedian Vivek, director Vincent Selva, music director Sreekanth Deva and producer P. Shanmugam participated in the function.
