NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday inaugurated a water boosting station at I-Avenue in Sarojini Nagar which is expected to considerably improve the water supply situation in the area. In view of water scarcity and the problem being faced by the residents of Sarojini Nagar, the water boosting station has been constructed in addition to three functioning in the colony. According to officials, the new boosting station would mitigate the problems of residents of GI and I Block which otherwise were not getting sufficient water as they were farthest from the existing boosting stations. Water pressure upThe new underground water tank has a capacity of 2 lakh litres and has been constructed at a cost of Rs.85 lakh. Motors and pumps of 40 horse power capacity have been installed along with it to augment the water pressure. The residents who until now were getting water for 30 to 40 minutes at a very low pressure are now expected to get water for about one and a half hours with good pressure, which New Delhi Municipal Council officials said would be enough to reach the overhead tanks of the buildings. NDMC’s present requirement of water is 225 MLD (million litres a day) of which only 115 MLD is drawn from Delhi Jal Board’s various reservoirs. The additional requirement is met by the NDMC on its own through 100 tube-wells and this water is supplied through 23 water boosting stations.
