CUTTACK: Responding to a memorandum submitted by a Cuttack-based NGO on the unfortunate incident of a Rourkela boy who lost a hand and a leg after being pushed from a running train allegedly by a train ticket examiner, the Railway Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the case. “East Coast Railway has been directed to conduct an enquiry for taking remedial action in this unfortunate case”, said a letter sent by Executive Director of the Railway Corporate Coordinator Arunendra Kumar to Bikash Das, executive president of the Committee for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP). The letter reaching here on Friday acknowledged that the incident was quite serious and appalling. The CLAP had demanded a compensation of s 10 lakh to the13-year-old boy and had also urged the Railways to make immediate arrangement to airlift Shankar Singh to a well-equipped hospital for an improved treatment. The CLAP memorandum had also asked Railway Minister Lalu Prasad to condemn the action of the TTE by making a public statement. The TTE, Navneet Mishra, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Mishra had allegedly pushed Shankar off the running train when the latter, who sweeps the train to eke out a living, failed to pay a fine of Rs 50 imposed by the former. Urging the Railway Minister to consider the plight of Shankar as an extraordinary case, the CLAP president had asked the railway authorities to undertake administrative measures in creating the Indian Railway into a children-friendly organization.
