“Industrial operations have been crippled” Thirteen associations plan procession SIVAKASI: Several trade bodies have called for a strike in Sivakasi on July 22 protesting against the unannounced power cuts that have “crippled the industrial operations”. In a statement jointly issued by the Sivakasi Masters Printers’ Association, J. Ramesh Kumar, the Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers’ Association, president, A. Asaithambi, and the All India Chamber of Match Industries, president, S. Sriram Ashok, said industries that had already been suffering from increasing input cost was further put to hardship by the frequent power cuts. Power cuts had been in effect in the town since last Diwali. Besides, industrial units were forced weekly holidays. The Minister for Electricity and the Chief Engineer (Distribution) announced that there would be no power cut from June. However, the situation aggravated in the last two weeks and power was being snapped for five hours every day. The statement said that 8,300 mega watt power was available for Tamil Nadu as on July 16, 2008, according to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board web site. Whereas the evening power requirement was only 8,834 megawatt, the peak demand during morning hours was only 8,259 megawatt. Power cut for 30 minutes a day would make do for the power shortage, the statement said. But, the situation worsened. Among the 13 associations that are participating in the strike are Sivakasi Tax payers’ Association, Sivakasi Plastic Manufacturers’ Association, Sivakasi Paper Manufacturers’ Association, Lorry Transport Association and Sivakasi Chamber of Trade Promotions. The associations planned to take out a procession to highlight their plight on the day, the statement said.
