This will help four lakh poor families across the Capital MCD supposed to start allotment as per court orders NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has written to Mayor Arti Mehra seeking immediate allotment of “teh bazari” (retailing) rights to hawkers and vendors so that nearly four lakh poor families across the Capital are able to earn their livelihood with dignity. Pressing for early action in the matter by MCD, the Chief Minister has mentioned in her letter that the Corporation was supposed to start allotment of teh bazari rights in keeping with Supreme Court orders. She said it had come to her notice that the process had not been completed yet and this had disturbed the lives of a large number of poor families who eke out a living through small businesses. Ms. Dikshit, who has marked a copy of her letter to the MCD Commissioner, said inaction by the Corporation in allotment of teh bazari had resulted in denial of earning opportunity to the poor. As per Supreme Court orders, she said, 2.5 per cent of Delhi’s total population has to be allotted teh bazari rights. But even after a lapse of a year poor families have not been able to get this. “This has created a situation of uncertainty resulting in hardship to them,” she said. The Chief Minister noted that around 2.75 lakh applications had been submitted for allotment of teh bazari rights and these were under consideration in the MCD. In each of the 272 wards, 500 to 1,500 people have applied for allotment of teh bazaari.
